Welcome
to TupeloSleep.com
The Majority of the patients seen in the
sleep lab at Tupelo Sleep Diagnostics are those suffering
from sleep apnea, whose symptoms often include loud snoring
and excessive daytime sleepiness. Patients are referred to
the Sleep Lab by their primary care physician. The sleep lab
physician evaluates the patient's sleep history. After the
initial evaluation, a sleep study is conducted using
state-of-the-art equipment to monitor sleep stage, eye
movement, arm and leg movement, nasal airflow, breathing and
respiratory efforts of individuals while sleeping. Because
sleep disorders are very treatable, sleep studies provide
individuals the potential for an enhanced quality of life
with less fatigue after a better night's sleep; a decreased
risk of heart disease; increased daytime functioning; and
improved social and family relationships.
Sleep is essential to our well-being, our
mental and emotional functioning, our health, and our safety.
Believe it or nor, merely one-third of our entire life is spent
sleeping. Before Thomas Edison's most famous invention, the
light bulb, people slept an average of nearly 10 hours a night;
today Americans average around 7 hours of sleep on weeknights
and 8 hours per night on weekends according to a '2002 Sleep In
America Poll'.
Approximately 70 million people in the United
States are affected by some sort of a sleep problem. About 40
million Americans suffer from chronic sleep disorders, and an
additional 20-30 million are affected by intermittent
sleep-related problems. However, an overwhelming majority of
sleep disorders remain undiagnosed and untreated according to a
National Commission on Sleep Disorders Research, 1992.
